{"id":616,"date":"2012-04-12T04:25:13","date_gmt":"2012-04-12T04:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drugpolicy.ca\/?p=616"},"modified":"2016-05-18T20:15:54","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T20:15:54","slug":"toronto-drug-strategy-consumption-room-feasibility-study-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mail.canadiandrugpolicy.ca\/fr\/toronto-drug-strategy-consumption-room-feasibility-study-released\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto Drug Strategy Consumption Room Feasibility study released"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_617\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-617\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-617 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/drugpolicy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/toscastudy.jpg\" alt=\"toscastudy\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Carol Strike and Dr. Ahmed Bayoumi (photo by Yuri Markarov)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2005 when the Toronto Drug Strategy was approved by Toronto City Council one of the main recommendations was to complete a needs assessment and feasibility study on the implications of establishing supervised consumption sites in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toscastudy.ca\/Home.html\" target=\"_blank\">The independent research project<\/a> \u2013 expanded to include Ottawa \u2013 was carried out over four years by Dr. Ahmed Bayoumi, a physician and research scientist at the Center for Research on Inner City Health at St. Michael\u2019s Hospital, and Dr. Carol Strike, an associate professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>The study recommends establishing injection sites, three in Toronto, two in Ottawa, that are fixed sites and should be integrated within existing service settings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1240\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1240\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toscastudy.ca\/TOSCA_Report.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1240 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/drugpolicy.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/report-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"report-236x300\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Download Report<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The study does not call for the establishment of consumption sites for people who smoke drugs but does call for more research on how best to provide supervised consumption through inhalation.
